Handheld or robotic laser cleaning?
Handheld and robotic describe how a task is delivered and organized, not a verdict on cleaning quality. Compare the complete work cycle and the people who operate, load, teach and maintain the system. CleanEraser has no documented manual-versus-robotic production trial in this project.
Map who controls the path and who handles the part
For a handheld proposal, ask how the operator reaches and positions the cleaning head across the required area. For a robotic proposal, ask how the part is located, how the path is prepared and who handles exceptions. These are selection questions, not claims that one arrangement automatically tolerates more variation or needs fewer people.
List the actual part families and changes between jobs. A robotic quotation should identify the assumed fixtures and interfaces; a handheld quotation should identify the proposed head and access arrangement. Neither description confirms that the geometry is reachable until the supplier documents the proposed setup.
Compare a whole cycle, including changes and rejects
Proposed evaluation: trace one representative job from loading through accepted output. Record positioning, treatment, inspection, unloading and any rework. Add a separate changeover observation when the part family changes. No cycle time or labor saving is asserted without those records.
| Decision question | Handheld enquiry | Robotic enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Operator position and head reach | Fixture, robot reach and path review |
| Part changes | Instruction and setup changes | Program and fixture changes |
| Acceptance | Operator trial and inspection record | Cell trial and inspection record |
| Staffing | Actual attended work stages | Loading, supervision and recovery roles |
Include setup and recovery in the safety review
OSHA's robot guidance calls for application risk assessment across design, integration, operation and maintenance. Its robotics overview notes accidents during non-routine activities such as programming, testing and adjustment. A purchasing inference is to ask for the intended loading, teaching, recovery and service arrangements before accepting a cell proposal. The presence of a robot does not document the safety of the laser process or authorize people to enter the working area. No collaborative-operation claim is made for the Robotic Cell concept.
Write two acceptance briefs rather than a volume cutoff
For the handheld option, ask the reviewer to define an authorized demonstration of access, work instructions and accepted surface output. For the robotic option, add fixture identity, part-location assumptions, interface responsibilities and exception handling to the trial brief. These are proposed evidence requests, not operational instructions.
Compare the resulting quotations only after the same output criteria have been applied. The project offers no defensible annual-volume threshold at which automation becomes preferable. Your mix of parts, accepted output and documented staffing should inform the business review rather than an invented break-even quantity.
Questions and answers
Will a robot remove the need for operators?
No staffing study is available. Request a task allocation covering loading, inspection, program changes, recovery and maintenance before forecasting labor requirements.
Is robotic cleaning automatically more consistent?
No comparison record is supplied. Define the acceptance measurements and evaluate the proposed complete cell rather than treating a robot label as a quality guarantee.
Is the Robotic Cell an approved collaborative installation?
No. It is an integration concept with unconfirmed equipment and controls. Any future installation needs its own documented design and responsible review.
Conclusion
Make the choice at the work-system level: parts, positioning, accepted output, operator roles and recovery arrangements. The stronger proposal is the one whose complete cycle and responsibilities can be demonstrated for your task, not the one carrying an automation label.
